Any man who has children knows how quickly his life changes. Everything around his world changes; his sleep, his view on life, his attitude, his dreams and also his marriage.
Hebrews ESV 10:24-25 says,
“24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”
Now I know this verse is speaking of meeting as brothers and sisters in Christ eagerly awaiting the coming of Christ but we can also take wisdom from that and apply it to our marriages. We need to be husbands to our wives just as much as we need to be fathers to our children. There doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day to do it all but we need that time with our wives, time to love, relax, and dream together as a couple. Here are a few refreshing ideas to with your wife.
1. Put The Children To Bed… EARLY: Eating out is absurdly expensive. After dinner, drinks, and possibly a dessert, your bill is up to $60 at a nice restaurant, add on a tip and you’ve reached $70. Keep your wallet light and stay home. If you have little ones, feed and put them to bed early. If you have older kids, send them off for a few hours (friends, grandparents, movie). After you have all the kids out of the house go all out. Get the house spotless for your wife. Put some candles on the table, have some flowers waiting for her and get cooking. Appetizers, dinner, and desserts are awaiting your creativity. Hang out like kids again: Make out, dance together, flirt together. Talk and listen to each other. I’ve read and heard that when you are on a date you shouldn’t talk about work or your kids but I disagree to an extent. Kids are hilarious (see https://dadsviewpoints.wordpress.com/funny-pages/ ) and what better way to unwind together by talking about kids and work just as long as it does not damper the mood and the two are not the sole focus of your conversation.
2. Find A Class To Do Together. It doesn’t have to be a six week course on woodworking but find something that involves the two of you doing something hands on together. In my area, there is a business that brings in an artist. The artist paints a picture and customers follow along. It’s fun to do at least once.
3. Go On A Picnic- Once again, avoid the high costs of eating out and picnic at a park. Pack a salad topped with Greek chicken, tomatoes, and croutons. Add some fruit and you’re good to go.
4. Take A Guided Tour- Taking a guided tour of a big city is a great way to let the fun come to you. You do not have to worry about anything except being with your wife. Someone else drives, while you sit and relax enjoying the views around you.
